Pete's Walks - West Wycombe, Speen, Hughenden (page 3 of 4)

The path from Boss Lane ran between fences, first with a garden on the right and a paddock or pasture on the left, then uphill between bushes and small trees. At  the top of the hill there were views south towards High Wycombe. At one point I went over a stile and jumped down the far side, startling a Great Dane that I hadn't seen on the other side! The footpath continued along a private drive to reach a main road (A4128) on the edge of Cryers Hill.

I crossed over and took the path on the other side. This was soon running alongside a meadow, sloping down on my right, with more pleasant views back towards Naphill. Further on the path ran between a wood and the back fences of some extensive gardens on my right. It then continued for some distance between hedgerows, before reaching a large arable field where it followed the field edge to the right and then the left, before finally turning right on a bridleway (named Church Lane on the OS map) to reach the A4128 again, almost opposite the entrance to Hughenden Manor.

As I entered the grounds of Hughenden Manor, I crossed an attractive chalk stream, flowing down the valley to join the river Wye. As I walked up the drive, there were cars queuing to get into the car park at Hughenden Manor (it's a National Trust site, once the home of the Victorian Prime Minister and novelist Benjamin Disraeli). I diverted briefly from the drive to go through the churchyard of Hughenden church and then continued straight on across a short bit of the park around the house to return to the drive.
