I soon came to a T-junction, close to the Raven pub on my right, where I turned left. This street soon left Hexton and then turned right, at some point becoming Mill Lane. I followed it for almost half a mile until it ended at a property named The Mill. Here the right of way continued straight on between a field and trees on my right. I soon reached a junction where I turned right onto a bridleway that followed the right edge of another field. The bridleway and field boundary soon turned half-left and then the right of way continued along a track or drive, passing between Green End Farm and Bury Farm.

On reaching a road I turned right. I went straight on where a road went left into the main part of Pegsdon (where there is another pub, which isn't shown on the OS map). I then forked right along a bit of old road and crossed a verge to reach the B655 (the road from Barton to Hitchin). Across this, I went through a gate and continued along a clear path that was heading up the Pegsdon Hills. There was a steady climb for about a quarter of a mile, then a short almost flat section where I had good views of Deacon Hill and a steep-sided valley named Barn Hole, then the path turned slightly left as it rose again along the edge of Barn Hole.
