After passing through Hatchet Wood, the bridleway continued to descend, now between mature hedgerows either side. At one point there was a view left over the Hambleden Valley around Arizona Farm. About half a mile after leaving the wood, the bridleway ended at a lane, where I turned left to reach Skirmett. At a road junction I walked straight on, immediately crossing a bridge over the Hamble Brook (sadly completely dry). The road soon turned left, and a few yards further on I turned right along a footpath.

The path started with garden boundaries either side, but soon there was a field beyond the fence on my left. The path rose quite steeply uphill, fairly soon turning right and then turning left after a short distance, now continuing uphill through Combe Wood. Just after I reached the wood, I stopped and chatted for a few minutes with a lady walker who had stopped for a break. There was still several hundred yards to the highest point of the path, but the gradient was now easy. At some point the path left Combe Wood and ran between Great Wood, on the left, and Poynatts Wood.
