Where the fence turned right, the path also turned and dropped down quite steeply into the Golden Valley. In the valley bottom I turned left and followed the path along the valley for about three-quarters of a mile. Where a surfaced drive began, I took a path going sharply right into a wood. This went gradually uphill through a wood, going round a hairpin bend and ending at the road through Little Gaddesden.

Across the road and a few yards to the left, I turned into a courtyard and went half left to a gap in a wall, through which a path went right to a stable-yard. Here I went right and then left, and continued on a track that initially had hedges either side. Soon there was a pleasant view on the right, along a valley leading to Nettleden. The bridleway turned left in the valley bottom, then after two or three hundred yards turned right, rising gradually uphill between a hedgerow and a paddock fence on my right. It then went through a small wood to reach a lane at Hudnall Common (where I sat on a seat to eat my lunch).
