Pete's Walks- Kensworth, Markyate, Studham, Whipsnade (page 2 of 3)

Almost as soon as the road entered Markyate, I took a footpath on the right (immediately before the first house on that side). After maybe a hundred yards I took another path that forked half-right, soon following a hedgerow on the left. The path gradually went up the valley side at an easy angle (there was a small 'up and down' at one point) to eventually reach a distant field corner. I turned half-left through a gate to follow another hedge on my left to reach Roe End, where I turned right along Roe End Lane.

Roe End Lane (approaching where the surfaced part ends and the byway begins)

At the end of the surfaced section of Roe End Lane, I continued straight on along the section that is a byway. As usual, this part of Roe End Lane was initially quite muddy. After half a mile or so I was back close to Byslip Wood, but I continued along Roe End Lane as it turned left and headed to Studham Common.

I then followed the bottom of Studham Common, which sloped uphill to my left. The Common is divided into three parts by two roads. Just before reaching the first road, I stopped on a seat to eat my lunch. I then crossed the first road and continued along the bottom of the central third of the common to reach the second road and the village of Studham itself. I then continued through the western part of the common, passing a football pitch and veering slightly left to reach the village school.
