Pete's Walks - Wigginton, Wendover Woods and St Leonards (page 2 of 5)

I went a short distance right down the lane, then turned left on a path climbing up Aston hill. the path was initially on the edge of a wood, with views out on my right northwards over a sloping field to the Vale of Aylesbury. Further on there were woods either side of me, with an area for mountain biking beyond the fence on my right. At the top of the hill I reached the drive to Aston Hill farm, which I followed westwards to a road rising up the hill.

A few yards to the left, a path started on the opposite side of the road. Almost immediately I forked left to cross a large pasture with a triangulation column in the centre. There had clearly been cattle here recently, but they'd all wandered through an open gate in a wire fence to the adjacent pasture to my left. Beyond the pasture, I rejoined the path that had started on the road at Aston Hill, which had curved left and now headed south through trees to join a surfaced drive which led me on to the Forestry Commission's visitor centre in Wendover Woods (did I mention it costs £5 to park there? :)). I made my way to the far side of the visitor centre, and started off down a bridleway (signposted 'Firecrest Trail', I believe) heading south or southeast.

The gravel track soon passed on open space on the left where there was a fine view over a valley called The Hale and along the line of wooded hills that my route would follow. The track descended slightly, soon with woods again on either side. After some distance the bridleway turned right, but a footpath continued ahead on the same well-surfaced track.
