Pete's Walks- Hambleden, Frieth, Bovingdon Green (page 4 of 5)

Across the lane a path continued between fences and climbed up the opposite slope. After a while the path ran between tall wooden garden fences, but almost as soon as I reached the fences the slope eased off and I could see the footpath sign at the end of the path about 100 yards ahead of me - for once an uphill section went quicker than I expected. I turned left along the road through Bovingdon Green, then turned right onto the green that presumably gives the village its name. I was now back on the route of the Chiltern Way, which I'd now follow all the way back to Hambleden. In the far right corner of the green a footpath started along a track, then ran between a fence and a hedge for some distance to reach Davenport Wood.

I looked carefully for waymarks, or white arrows on trees, as I walked through the wood, as I'd got completely lost here when I did this walk before (despite having followed this path successfully at least twice before!). When the path crossed a track in a small depression I realised where I'd gone wrong - a waymark on a path showed where the faint path continued slightly left of straight on, I can only think this waymark was hidden by foliage when I was here in May 2012. A short way along this faint path I reached a path crossroads, where I turned right onto a clearer path through the wood. This led to a car park by a lane (the last section of this path was a little indistinct). Across the lane a path continued through Pullingshill Wood, soon dropping steeply downhill (somehow I'd forgotten about this steep descent).

On leaving the wood the path continued between a fence and a hedge, running along the side of  a shallow valley. After a while, the path turned left, to go up and down the sides of the small valley to reach a road. A few yards to the right, I entered Homefield Wood on the other side of the road. A long track led through the wood, and on into the adjoining Heath Wood.
