The path then descended gently into a valley - over the strip of maize that was initially to my left here there was a field where people were picking pumpkins (Halloween is only a few weeks away). The path continued up the opposite slope, which was slightly steeper, through a couple of meadows - partway up the second one I had a mature hedge on my left. I went through a kissing-gate in a corner, and continued uphill through another grassy meadow, with a small wood now to my right. By Norringtonend Farm (to my left) I crossed a stile into a paddock, and then turned left (with the farmhouse to my left) to reach a gate and the drive from the farm. Following it to the right, I was soon crossing a bridge over the M1 (I looked unavailingly for an Eddie Stobart lorry).

Across the bridge, I soon turned right on to a path that ran along the embankment parallel to the motorway, with a wood to my left. I was surprised to see a Comma butterfly here. At the end of the wood, the path turned left, leaving the motorway, and started to follow a headland between a succession of fields. I remembered once seeing Chicory growing here, but there was no sign of it today. As I reached the edge of Redbourn, I went straight on where a path went left, and a little further on the path started to run between hedges either side before continuing down an alley to reach a cul-de-sac. At the far end of the cul-de-sac I went right (more or less straight on), soon joining a paved path to the left of this street. I went straight on where a road went right, and then had a school to my right. I then turned right to pass another side of the school, and I continued along the road to reach the large common in the centre of Redbourn.
