I turned right along the road, which soon turned left and dropped downhill (I heard and saw some Jackdaws here). I then forked left into a lane (this used to be marked as an 'other route with public access' on the OS Map, but the latest edition of the maps show it as a lane). I followed the lane for about a third of a mile until it ended at a T-junction.

I turned left at the T-junction, and then turned left again onto a footpath, which rose uphill beside a hedgerow on my left. The path soon levelled out, and at the end of the field it crossed over a drive or track. It then continued through the parkland of Rossway, a large mansion over to my left. Beyond this, it passed the ruins of Marlin Chapel (it dates to the 13th century, but just four columns of stone work remain).

The path then ended at a junction with a bridleway near Marlin Chapel Farm, where I turned left (actually more or less straight on). The bridleway soon left a wood (Cock Grove) and switched to the right of a long hedgerow of tall trees - I could soon see the unusual water tower on the edge of Berkhamstead ahead of me. At the end of a large field. the bridleway switched to the left of the hedgerow (no longer tall trees). At the end of the huge field on my left, the bridleway turned right along a concrete farm drive (with the A41 road nearby on the left) and followed it until it ended at a lane.
